TEN Wirral schools will join the borough’s recycling scheme after grey wheelie bins were delivered to them.
Staff and pupils at the schools will now be able to recycle paper, card, cans, tins, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars in the classroom and playground.
The bins are a half- sized version of the grey wheelie bins many children and staff have at home, and can take the same materials as the kerbside collection.
Cllr Gill Gardiner, cabinet member for environment, said: “I’ve spoken to so many children and young people who are very keen on recycling and the environment in general, and it makes perfect sense for them to be able to recycle the same at school as they can at home.
“Recycling waste from schools could make a significant contribution to reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill.”
Most Wirral schools will have received their grey bins by the end of this school year.
The roll-out of grey bins to schools follows a successful pilot project at St Anselm’s College, Birkenhead, last year.
