School reopens after fuel shortage

A SCHOOL will reopen today after running out of fuel to feed its heating system.

The St Thomas Becket wing of St Edmund of Canterbury School, Huyton, has stayed closed since half term because of the heating failure.

The problems arose after the oil heating was left burning at a low level over the half term break to prevent pipes from bursting.

However, the measure used up a large amount of fuel which ran out leaving the stand alone wing languishing in freezing conditions. It took until yesterday for another delivery but Knowsley Council, as the LEA, reports temperatures are now high enough to allow pupils to return.

A spokesman said: “Closing a school is never a decision we take lightly but the conditions have been so cold that we felt there was no alternative.”
