Road to stay closed for days after water mains burst misery

A MASSIVE clean-up operation was continuing last night at around 300 Liverpool households hit by a major water mains burst.

For the second time in two months, a 44in main split on Liverpool Road in Huyton, cascading water into houses and gardens. Some 30 homes near the junction of the A57 and Primrose Drive bore the worst.

Tenants Mark and Diane Tomkinson have had to leave a house sodden with water for hotel accommodation. Diane, a diabetic who suffers asthma and arthritis, has been told by Environmental Health officers that their home is uninhabitable.

She said: “It’s just still so damp and there have been so many people coming in and out today trying to sort things out that I’m exhaus-ted. I’ve been on the go for 48 hours. No one is taking total responsibility.”

A joint support centre has been set up at King George V Sports Centre, Longview Road, open today from 10am-4pm and 10am-3pm on Sunday.

The westbound side of Liverpool Road has now reopened but the eastbound carriageway will remain closed for several days.
