SECURITY workers and police searching for an intruder at a petrochemical plant called off their search last night.
The Shell oil refinery in Stanlow was put on high alert after a member of the public reported a suspicious looking man carrying a backpack.
Armed police combed the site in search of the intruder, but it was called off at 6.20pm.
The A5117 eastbound between the M53 at junction 10 and B5132 Cryers Lane and Pool Lane was reopened after being closed since midday.
An armed response team, dog handlers and a specialist police search team were assisted by airborne officers.
Cheshire police spokeswoman Jacqui Hanson said: “A member of the public reported a suspicious looking person entering the petrochemical site.”
