A POLICE officer is in a serious condition after a 999 call ended in a horrific crash.
The head-on collision near Lower Lane police station between his police Vauxhall Astra and a Renault Megane left both cars in shreds at around 6.30am yesterday.
The police car span across East Lancs Road coming to rest across the carriageway in the middle of the traffic lights on Lower House Lane.
Firefighters from Kirkdale station used hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the roof and doors and rescue the officer. Both drivers were taken to University Hospital Aintree on a spinal board.
The officer remains there in a stable but serious condition.
The other driver, a local man, was treated at the scene for minor injuries and taken to hospital as a precaution.
Traffic congestion in the area was severe for several hours.
Any witnesses should contact police on 0151 777 5730.
