A COMMUNITY speed initiative aiming to calm the speed of traffic in residential areas without the use of speed bumps or chicanes has been launched in Wirral.
The “Bring accidents down 2 zero” campaign involves the installation of large 20mph signs on lamp columns, to alert drivers to the recommended speed.
It relies solely on the drivers’ co-operation to obey the advised speed limit.
Wirral is the first Merseyside authority to pilot such a scheme, and the initiative will be complemented by Community Speedwatch volunteers who will be monitoring the areas to capture speeds using state-of- the-art radar guns.
The data captured is then analysed by Merseyside Police and the authority says action may then be taken against drivers.
The scheme informs motorists that driving at 20mph makes you 80% less likely to have an accident, and that by driving at 20mph, we can “Bring accidents down 2 zero”.
All local households will receive an information leaflet, and posters have been sent to local shops and schools to raise awareness.
