700 new Kirkby jobs at risk, Tesco warns town

HUNDREDS of new jobs announced yesterday could be put at jeopardy, if Tesco’s bid to redevelop in Kirkby is subjected to government scrutiny.

Sources close to the supermarket giant are concerned that delays could put the multi-million pound Destination Kirkby scheme at risk.

Yesterday, Tesco announced that half of the 700 jobs created in their new store would be reserved for the long-term unemployed in the area.

Their joint project with Everton, which includes a new football stadium, Tesco Extra store and up to 50 other retail units could create 2,000 jobs.

However, a reliable source told The Daily Post: “This is a great scheme that represents a once in a generation opportunity to deliver private money into the area ensuring employment.

“But as with any investment if the situation changes, so does the process.

“For instance, the longer it goes on without a clear picture of the future, the greater the risk to the project.”

Tesco has committed to working with Knowsley council’s Employment and Skills group to ensure plans are in place to start the necessary training if planning permission for the project is granted later this year.

But the supermarket giant is concerned that a call in, or even a public inquiry by the Secretary of State, will see costs rocket. Without the promise of any return, the supermarket may consider cutting its losses.

A source said: “We’re not there yet, but we don’t want the scheme to go off line. Especially given the positive comments from many in the area.”

Kirkby councillor Eddie Connor, cabinet member for Culture, Leisure and Communities underlined the importance he placed on Tesco’s bid.

He said: “It is an opportunity not to be missed and I hope all the relevant agencies now work together to maximise the benefit for Kirkby and to help boost our local economy.”

Local MP, George Howarth, said: “I have consulted local residents groups and individuals throughout Kirkby over the past few weeks and months about the proposed development.

“Kirkby residents have told me that, if the proposal does go ahead, they would want the proposed Regeneration Partnership to deliver real jobs.”
