Project wins top accolade for city

ST GEORGE’S Hall won a Civic Trust Award last night, as judges praised the use of local, skilled workers and use of recycled materials.

The refurbishment project on the historic building was described as, “a wonderful symbol of civic pride” as it picked up the Capital of Culture award at a national ceremony hosted in Newcastle.

A total of thirty Civic Trust Awards were handed out in an event which originally attracted over 400 entrants, and aims to encourage projects that are culturally, socially or economically beneficial, and make an outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the environment.

The Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Ellesmere Port was also successful, with judges saying the 100m long sandstone wall which screens the site as a “simple, attractive and dramatic backdrop.”

Formby Pool and Liverpool South Parkway Interchange also received commendations.

Of St George’s Hall, judges said: “As originally planned when St George’s Hall was first designed, the building has played host to city functions and celebrations, especially fitting in 2008, Liverpool’s year as Capital of Culture.”
