Tunnel closed

THE Birkenhead Queensway tunnel was closed to all traffic on safety grounds last night after a possible problem with the carriageway.

A Merseytravel spokesman said the decision to close the tunnel to all traffic was taken after an electrician spotted a small piece of concrete which appeared to have fallen loose from the underside of the carriageway.

He added: “We expect the tunnel to be open as scheduled at 6.30am.”
