Boxing sessions blaze a trail thanks to firefighters

FIREFIGHTERS in St Helens are tackling anti-social behaviour by encouraging young people to box.

The station has teamed up with local hero Joey Paladino, once one of the best heavyweight boxers in the UK, to open a boxing academy for children.

Very few clubs cater for children but the academy at Sutton Amateur Boxing Club is open to five to 16-year olds two nights a week.

The Tuesday and Thursday sess-ions coincide with the peak times for children gathering in gangs, drinking and committing criminal damage.

Ex-firefighter and boxer Paul Dunn, who now works for youth services, said he hopes the academy will help young people particularly those with anger management problems.

He will help mentor the children alongside firefighters Mike Dwyer, Ian Simms and Becci Woods.

Ms Woods said: “Everyone around here has heard of Joey as he’s an ex-pro so it’s a big thing for the kids to get involved in this.

“I’m looking forward to it, it should be a really good experience. It will be great to see the kids working towards something and developing a passion towards boxing.

“I’m also looking forward to developing my own skills as well.”

The coaching will be done by Amateur Boxing Association coaches, including Joey Paladino himself.

Mr Paladino said: “Not only are we teaching them to have discipline but they are able to take out any frustration on a punchbag.

“It sorts out the men from the boys, giving them self-esteem and character building.”

The academy opened its doors last month and is already proving popular with dozens of young people.

Many are referred through partner agencies working from the station including family support.

Paul Dunn said: “The academy offers them the chance to train, box and learn in a secure and safe environment.

“And will hopefully promote self-discipline, social consciousness and good citizenship.”
