MORE than 8,000 pints of beer will be served and 4,000 burgers eaten at Liverpool John Lennon Airport as record numbers pass through this Easter.
The first bank holiday weekend of 2008 is set to be the biggest yet at the airport where staff are gearing up for the Easter Bank Holiday getaway rush.
Forecasters expect around 65,000 passengers to travel between Good Friday and Easter Monday – an increase of 7% on last year’s figures. A grand total of 480 scheduled flights will taxi along the runways.
According to SSP Air, the airport’s main caterer, thousands of drinks and fast food options will be downed by holiday makers at Burger King and other outlets over the four days.
The swathe of facts and figures come as passengers take advantage of the low-cost fares and make for a range of Euro-pean regions. There are now 60 destinations to choose from at John Lennon Airport (JLA).
This year many holiday-makers are jetting off to a number of Spanish hotspots including Alicante, Majorca, Madrid and Valencia in search of warmer weather. Others are taking city breaks in Amster-dam, Stockholm, Dublin, and Belfast. Friedrichshafen in Germany, which is close to number of ski resorts, is also proving popular with skiers and snowboarders.
Robin Tudor, JLA spokesman, said: “This weekend will be JLA’s busiest Easter to date as people escape to enjoy the long weekend.
‘‘Just as important however, is that this year we also hope to be welcoming thousands of passengers flying in via the airport as they visit Merseyside to join in the Capital of Culture celebrations.”
The airport is hoping the 08 training given to taxi drivers will mean visitors will touch down to a first-class welcome. Management are confident that public transport is now better than ever with more bus services serving the airport with the city centre, Liverpool South Parkway and Manchester.
Mr Tudor added: “This year there are plenty art exhibitions in and around the terminal to occupy passengers.
“For example, passengers and visitors can visit the Yellow Submarine, have their picture taken with famous John Lennon statue, visit the new addition to the collection which is the Taxi Project or go on the Fossil Mystery Tour around the terminal building.”
