MERSEYSIDE Police’s hi-tech unit is to almost double in size to deal with the increasing technological dimension of investigating crimes, the Daily Post can reveal.
A mix of police officers and civilian staff are responsible for dealing with a host of crimes from abusive images of children to fraud.
Officers have to undergo ongoing counselling to cope with the strain of what they have to watch as part of their battle against paedophiles.
The unit, originally set up 11 years ago and based in a wing of Mather Avenue police station, south Liverpool, will see the number of forensic examiners increase from seven to 12. The explosion in broadband internet – making downloading obscene images far quicker – mobile phones, and other digital devices in recent years has meant Merseyside Police has had to respond to the growing technological aspect to crime.
The investment in extra staff follows the introduction of a cutting-edge piece of software which has halved the time examiners have to spend classifying images of child abuse on individual cases.
