QUEEN guitarist Brian May has been confirmed as the new chancellor of John Moores University (JMU).
May said he was delighted at receiving “the great honour” and said the university’s “dream, plan, achieve” slogan was music to his ears.
May, who will act as JMU’s ambassador at high-profile functions across the UK, will be formally appointed at a ceremony in Liverpool’s St George’s hall on April 14.
Last summer, May was made an honorary fellow by JMU for his contribution to the scientific study of the universe.
The 60-year-old rocker, an accomplished astronomy student before his Queen days, recently co-authored Bang! The Complete History Of The Universe, with Patrick Moore and Chris Lintott.
May said: “This is a great honour and a new challenge for me.
“I agree wholeheartedly with the JMU ethos of ‘dream, plan, achieve’ – such simple words but they summarise perfectly the educational experience JMU provides.”
Sir Malcolm Thornton, the university’s chairman of governors, said: “He perfectly embodies the ‘can do’ attitude of JMU. “He is going to be a great chancellor for the students and a wonderful figurehead for the university.”
