Air pollution message sent to Government

CLIMATE change campaigners in Liverpool dressed up as pilots, air steward-esses, and Prime Minister Gordon Brown to get their message across about aviation pollution yesterday.

They handed over aircraft-shaped postcards to Paul Stowers, business environ-ment officer at Government Office North West, to forward to the Prime Minister. They are calling on Mr Brown to support a stronger climate change law which covers all sources of CO² emissions, including the UK’s share of emissions from international aviation and shipping.

Frank Kennedy, North West campaigns co-ordinator for Friends of the Earth, said: “Counting society’s carbon footprint without including flying is like totting up alco-hol intake but leaving out the whisky.

“Today’s cheap air fares could cost future generations far more than money. In 30 years’ time, if flying contin-ues to grow as at present, the airlines could use up all the country’s entire share of fossil fuels.”
