William Hague rallies Tory faithful in Merseyside

FORMER leader of the opposition William Hague spent last night rallying Conservative candidates across Merseyside.

The Shadow Foreign Secretary addressed the faithful at Huyton Park Conservative Club, and Formby Golf Club.

He told around 50 members gathered in the Knowsley club’s lounge: “We’ve got a great chance in these elections. And now we’re putting more of a focus on the North, which hasn’t always been the case. What would really shock Labour is if we won seats here, in places like Roby, where they don’t expect Conservative wins.”

Standing with Robin Anthony Webster, the Tory candidate for Roby, who narrowly missed out on a seat in 2006, Mr Hague appealed for party members to get numbers to the polls in May.

Mr Hague joked that his litmus test for public opinion was political cartoons, rather than the polls printed at election times. Having been the butt of several caustic sketches himself, Hague said he had noticed it was now New Labour’s leaders being lampooned.

In a Q&A session he tackled Zimbabwe, the nanny state, the EU, binge drinking, immigration and the death penalty – which he repeated his support for.

Mr Hague also visited activists at Weaverham and Warrington in a packed day.
