Man hit by runaway horse critical

A RACECOURSE worker who was hit by a running horse at Haydock on Saturday was described as “critical but stable” last night.

An investigation has been launched into the incident which left Malcolm Sibley, 64, with serious injuries. He was taken to Fazakerley hospital following the accident, which saw the David Nicholls-trained Pure Imagination get loose and crash through a running rail, colliding with Mr Sibley, who lives in Newton-le-Willows.

Haydock clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright said: “He’s in intensive care and is critical but stable, that is all we know.”

A police spokesman added: “We were present at the scene, and received a call at 6.50pm.

“The horse had broken through some fencing and collided with a spectator. He sustained injuries to his chest.

“We are unlikely to become involved with the investigation, because it is not seen as a criminal matter.”
