Council proves it’s a good egg at awards ceremony

COMPASSION for chickens earned Wirral Council a place at the “Good Egg” award at a ceremony in London.

Wirral Council was recognised for its pioneering move which will ensure more than 550 hens supplying the council with 152,000 eggs each year will live their lives free from cages.

The authority is one of four local authorities in the UK to receive a Good Egg Award.

They joined more than 15 leading companies such as Cadbury’s, Hellmann’s, and The National Trust, at the Compassion in World Farming event.

Winners are awarded for no longer using eggs from caged hens. Prizes were handed out by actor Joanna Lumley, a patron of the charity.

Ms Lumley said:“Battery cages are an outrage. Let’s all commit to buying only free range eggs.”

The policy includes all eggs used in council catering
