Search is on for artist to create ‘lasting legacy’ of Liverpool

AN ARTIST is being sought to bring the Liverpool Daily Post’s Liverpool Map campaign to life.

For the last six months, we have asked our readers what areas of the North West are part of Liverpool’s identity, and the project is now moving on to find global locations favoured for inclusion.

But before this happens we are opening up the bidding to artists who want to create our map, which will be donated to the Museum of Liverpool, which is currently being built, as a lasting legacy of the 2008 culture celebrations.

The new map will show where the people of Merseyside think Liverpool’s borders are, and it will also highlight Liverpool’s growing local, national and global influence.

Georgina Young, head of social history at National Museums Liverpool, said: “The Liverpool Map is an exciting chance to commission an artwork for Liverpool and its people.

“It will be right at home in the Museum of Liverpool, exploring people's experiences of living here and capturing the unique global reach of the city's history and identity.

“I can't wait to find out the results of the global poll and see people's creative ideas.”

Creative director of the Liverpool Culture Company, Phil Redmond, added: “The Liverpool Map will be a lasting legacy for the city and is a great opportunity for an artist to leave their work as a reminder in years to come.

“As such, this is not just open to established artists but those starting their careers and wanting to make a real impact.” The Map will be located in the People’s City Gallery, or in the main Atrium within the new £68m Museum of Liverpool.

Interested artists should submit an expression of interest by Monday, June 30.

They must include a design concept consisting of up to two concept visuals and 500 words, a

proposed budget, examples of previous artwork/commissions and referees.

To discuss the project informally, artists can contact Janet Dugdale, Director of Urban History or Georgina Young on 0151 478 4210 or email georgina.young@liverpoolmuseums.org.uk.

The project is part of Open Culture – a platform to enable the people of Liverpool to engage with the celebrations for 2008.

Expressions of interest should be sent to: National Museums Liverpool addressed to Janet Dugdale, Director of Urban History, Museum of Liverpool, Dock Traffic Office, Albert Dock, Liverpool, L3 4AX.
