Man dies in St Helens explosions

A man has died following an explosion at an industrial unit, police said.

The victim was working at an unidentified business premises in Hoghton Road, St Helens, Merseyside, when the blast took place.

Fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene shortly after 12.30pm yesterday.

The victim, who has not been named, was taken to nearby Whiston Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Two other men were also hurt and a recovering in hospital.

Merseyside Police said a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive is now under way.
