A MAN was rescued from the River Mersey by ferry workers who saw him struggling in the water near the Liverpool Landing Stage last night.
The 48-year-old was seen hanging from a set of chains near the Mersey Ferry terminal at around 5.40pm.
Staff on board The Viking fast ferry heading to the Isle of Man spotted him in the water.
They lowered their lifeboats and pulled him from the water, then transported him to land where an ambulance was waiting to take him to hospital.
It is not clear how the man came to be in the Mersey but he is believed to have been known to police.
Coastguards received a call from staff at the Mersey Ferries Company and a number of other witnesses who had seen him in the river.
The Marine Fire One rescue vessel was deployed to the terminal but the man had been rescued before it arrived.
He was rushed to the Royal Hospital Accident and Emergency department for an assessment.
