LIVERPOOL’S first RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden for nearly 40 years is set to receive a Royle seal of approval.
Actress Sue Johnston will open the city’s exhibit, entitled Mr Roscoe’s Garden, on Monday.
The Royle Family and Waking the Dead star grew up in Prescot and found fame playing Sheila Grant in Liverpool-based soap Brookside.
Sue Johnston said: “I’m delighted to be helping launch Liverpool’s exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show.
“I had a fantastic time at the official opening for European Capital of Culture back in January so I was only too happy to show my support again.
“It’s a great honour for Liverpool to take part in such a prestigious event, and it’s especially fitting during such a special year for the city.
“I’m looking forward to seeing Mr Roscoe’s Garden in all its glory.”
The exhibit is inspired by William Roscoe, who founded Liverpool’s Botanical Collection in 1803.
Acknowledged as one of the city’s greatest sons, Roscoe’s passion for plants ensured that Liverpool’s Botanical Collection acquired international significance, and the collection remains one of the largest of its kind in civic ownership.
Paul Scragg, Liverpool City Council’s parks and environment manager, said: “After a gap of more than 40 years it’s extremely exciting to be heading for Chelsea once again, especially given that 2008 is such a special year for Liverpool.
“It’s a fantastic honour for the city and a unique opportunity to raise the profile of our botanical collection.”
