British soldier becomes 96th victim of Afghan conflict

A BRITISH soldier died in an explosion in Afghanistan yesterday, the Ministry of Defence said.

The soldier was on foot patrol in Musa Qaleh, in Helmand province, when he was caught in the blast.

Next of kin have been informed. The death brings to 96 the number of British personnel who have died in Afghanistan since 2001.

The family of the soldier has asked that no further information about him be released.

The spokesman said: "It is with deep regret the Ministry of Defence must confirm the death of a British soldier in Afghanistan today, May 19, 2008. British forces were conducting operations in the Musa Qaleh area when a soldier patrolling on foot was caught in an explosion and tragically lost his life.

"No one else was injured in the incident.

"The soldier’s family have been informed, and have asked for privacy from the media as they come to terms with their loss.

"The MoD will not be providing any further updates in line with the wishes of the family, who are in our thoughts at this difficult time."

A second soldier fighting for the International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) died in Afghanistan yesterday. His nationality has not been released, but the MoD confirmed that he was not British.

Isaf spokesman Brigadier General Carlos Branco said: "Our hearts and minds are with the families and other loved ones of the dedicated soldiers who died today. "These soldiers died honourably, helping to bring security to the people of Afghanistan."
