Surge in photographs for 2008 culture showcase

THE recent good weather has led to a sudden surge in the number of photos being submitted to a unique online group showcasing images in and around Liverpool during 2008.

More than 2,500 photos taken by photographers from the region are now contained within the Liverpool Daily Post’s group on photo-sharing website Flickr.

The aim of the group was to provide a space where pictures taken in Merseyside during Capital of Culture could be displayed – showing the world how people see 2008.

One of the most unusual to date comes from Barney F. It is a shot taken off Hilbre Island, looking over the Dee Estuary, on the Wirral. With the sun setting in the distance, the rocks emerging from the sand look eerily like a face. It’s already been shortlisted for a national competition and it is easy to see why.

Keeping with the sunsets and shorelines theme is Flickr user NorthShore, who spotted the sun setting behind the new wind turbines off the Crosby coast and grabbed his great image as a result.

Back in the city centre, and we’ve had dozens of pictures from the weekend’s Hub festival posted online.

The best to date has come from Flickr member “Fanatical Apathist”, who captured a BMX biker in mid-air for a rather dramatic shot.

You can see all the pictures in our Flickr group at www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/flickr, or log on to www.flickr.com/groups/liverpooldailypost08 to leave your own.
