THE World Firefighter Games being held this year in Liverpool have been given another boost with the announcement that the New York Fire Department is sending a squad.
The games are taking place as part of the city’s Capital of Culture celebrations and this week a crew of 25 from the Big Apple has signed up.
As part of their attendance they will be bringing an invitation to attend their own World Police Fire Games in 2011, to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 events.
Cllr Warren Bradley, a Toxteth based firefighter, said: “As Council leader and Liverpool firefighter, I’m immensely proud that the city will be hosting the World Firefighter Games 2008.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for us all to show firefighters from around the world what a fantastic place Liverpool is – and what better time to do this than during the Capital of Culture year. I’m looking forward to joining in the events.
“I’m keen to see that World Firefighters Games 08, much like Capital of Culture itself, will have a legacy that will benefit the local communities.
“The opportunities to participate in sport in Liverpool have never been greater and I’d like tosee fellow firefighters take a lead.”
