Retrial for driver on death charge

THE jury in the trial of a man accused of killing his friend by driving dangerously have been discharged.

Mark Rigby, 28, was accused of causing Phillip Charalambous’s death by turning into the path of an on-coming car on the East Lancs Road.

Front-seat passenger Mr Charalambous was thrown from the car and suffered fatal head injuries and internal bleeding.

But the jury was discharged on the second day of Rigby’s trial after the prosecution offered no evidence on the charge of careless driving while under the influence of drink and drugs.

Rigby, of Charles Street, St Helens, will face a retrial on the death by dangerous driving charge in September.
