A MOTHER of a 13-year-old who skipped more than 90% of all his school lessons has been jailed.
Christine Andrews, 47, of Astley Road, Huyton, has been handed a 10-week prison sentence by Knowsley Magistrates Court for failing to ensure her 13-year-old son attended school regularly.
The prosecution was brought by Knowsley Council under the Education Act 1996 and relates to the period February 19 - June 15, 2007.
The court heard the child had attended only 34 out of a possible 136 sessions – an attendance level of just 25%.
The council claims to have worked with Ms Andrews over a number of years, but her child’s attendance had failed to improve. By May 23 this year, it had fallen to just 6.9%
The court was informed Andrews had two previous convictions for similar offences, for which she paid a total of £90 and in 2005 and a six-month conditional discharge.
Damian Allen, Knowsley’s education chief, said: “Young people need to be in school.”
