University Hospital Aintree's local cure

A LIVERPOOL hospital with a £1.5m grocery shopping list has cut its food miles by buying more local produce.Š

Now other hospitals are contacting University Hospital Aintree to see how they’ve done it.

Catering manager Sandra Higgins said: “We decided to set ourselves a 100-mile radius and we now have only six suppliers who are outside that.

“Our pork now comes from Ormskirk rather than Denmark, we feature Lancashire cheeses, local ham and ice cream from Pendle.

“We’ve also looked at cutting food journeys by getting our fruit and potatoes from the same supplier.”

The hospital feeds 1,100 patients £2.80 per person a day.
