Positive start for city star gazers

ACC Liverpool Arena, Kings Dock Arena and Conference Centre

LIVERPOOL’S astronomy conference, which has attracted 300 leading astronomers, kicked off yesterday.

The day began with introductions and a scene setter at Liverpool Echo Arena before America’s Dr Garth Illingworth outlined the past 10 years of American space exploration.

Dr Illingworth, from the University of California, spoke of future missions and said the Hubble Telescope would soon be replaced by the James Webb Space Telescope.

Mike Bode, Liverpool John Moores University’s Professor of Astrophysics, who helped organise the conference, said: “Two main things came out of the first day. Firstly, all the opportunities for Britain and Europe to take part in the future of astronomy and secondly, how Europe and America can work together.”

He added: “It has been a great success.”
