Explosion fears as ink factory evacuated in blaze drama

EIGHT fire engines helped extinguish a blaze in an ink factory containing highly inflammable solvents yesterday.

The fire broke out in the processing room of Sterling Colour, on Netherley Road, Tarbock Green, leaving a 46-year-man needing hospital treatment.

Staff were evacuated after the blaze at 3.05pm, and Netherley Road was closed to eliminate the risk of an explosion.

The injured worker was taken to Whiston Hospital and was being treated for 30% burns last night.

By chance, the Belle Vale unit of the fire service were passing the fire as it broke out.

Sterling Colour produces pigment used in paint, solvent based products and plastics.
