Garry Newlove widow's sadness after Jack Straw meeting

Garry Newlove murder trial at Chester Crown Court

THE widow of Warrington murder victim Garry Newlove has spoken of her disappointment after meeting Justice Secretary Jack Straw to discuss her crusade against Britain’s thugs.

Helen Newlove, whose husband, Garry, was beaten and kicked to death when he confronted a gang vandalising her car in Warrington last August, met Mr Straw in a bid to persuade the Government to introduce tougher measures on violent youths.

But she said after the meeting, which was filmed for a documentary being broadcast tonight: “He listened but I don’t think he took it in.”

And Mr Straw told Mrs Newlove her belief that Asbos – which he introduced in 1998 when he was Home Secretary – were seen as trophies by wayward teenagers was “nonsense”.

Since her husband’s death, she has campaigned to try to change the law, seeking stricter punishments and finding ways to combat youth crime before it happens.

Among Mrs Newlove’s aims are the reintroduction of corporal and capital punishment, abolishing “tariffs” on jail sentences so that life means life, a crackdown on under-age drinking which is fuelling teenage violence, banning alcohol from the streets, naming and shaming parents whose children commit crime and more rights for victims.
