FROM the “chaos” of missed collections to a national example – Wirral’s bin collection service is to be used by the Government as a case study of best practice.
Wirral Council’s waste and recycling service has been named by DEFRA (Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) as “one of the most improved performers” in the country.
DEFRA have now requested Wirral be promoted nationally as a case study following the success of the new service and the sound partnership working with the council’s waste contractor, Biffa.
Wirral’s recycling rates have soared from 14% in 2006/07 to 32% in 2007/08.
Cllr Gill Gardiner, cabinet member for environment, said: “I am absolutely delighted with DEFRA’s response to our outstanding service improvements.
“Our latest recycling figures for April, 2008, actually show a 34.5% recycling rate, so we’re well on track to meet our target of 35.5% for 2009/10 and I would like to thank the people of Wirral for their brilliant response.’’
