Breakdancing pupils launch charter for childcare

PUPILS of Rock Ferry High School helped launch a charter dedicated to supporting Wirral children and young people yesterday.

The Year 7 pupils performed a break-dance routine in their first performance since they began rehearsals two months ago.

The pupils gave the display in Wallasey Town Hall, at the launch of the Wirral Health and Wellbeing Charter for Children and Young People.

The charter sets out a commitment to support development of health services in schools and other youth settings in Wirral.

For some, this might include extending their school nurse’s time, providing more support to pupils wanting to stop smoking, or having resources to tackle issues such as alco-hol misuse or stress.

Another initiative, Teen Life coaching, which addresses life-style and weight management prob-lems, is also being considered.

Wirral MPs Angela Eagle, Frank Field, Ben Chapman and Stephen Hesford have signed up, along with many local organisations, including Wirral PCT and Wirral council.

Deborah Williams, health promotion strategy manager who is leading the Charter on behalf of the PCT, said: “Young people see their school nurse with many worries and concerns, such as family relationships, bereavement, bullying, sexual health, friendship and lifestyle issues and other typical teenage problems. We need to be able to address their concerns quickly, effectively and sensitively.”

Cllr Phil Davies, Wirral’s cabinet member for children’s services and lifelong learning, said: “Children and young people in Wirral are our most important asset.”
