Olympic team in the swim at Liverpool Aquatics Centre

THE British Olympic swimming team will visit Merseyside tomorrow to officially open the new £17m Aquatics Centre.

The Olympic-sized pool in Wavertree hosts the Amateur Swimming Association Championships (50m) from July 10 to 13, bringing the country’s finest swimmers to the city.

All 37 members of the British squad will compete in the prestigious national championships – their last competitive event before travelling to the Beijing Olympics next month.

Squad members will help Liverpool council leader Warren Bradley unveil a plaque before diving into the pool with local schoolchildren for a swimming session.

Cllr Bradley said: “The Liverpool Aquatics Centre is an absolutely world-class venue.”

The centre opened its doors to the public in March.
