Council’s financial record praised

CHESTER City Council has been ranked among the top 25% of local authorities in England for its efficiency in collecting council tax and business rates.

The national average for council tax collection in 2007/08 was 97.1%, – Chester scored 98.7%.

The national average for collecting business rates was 98.8%, but the city council managed to bring in 99.7% of the money. The city council is ranked 53rd for council tax and 17th for business rates collection among 354 local authorities.

Chester’s executive member for customer services, Cllr Stephen Mosley, said: “By collecting such a high percentage, it allows us to reduce the average cost for all council tax payers in the city.”
