Man is held after woman stabbed

A 49-YEAR-OLD man was being held on suspicion of murder last night, after a woman died from stab wounds at a house in Sefton.

Police were called to the address at Morningside, Crosby, at about 9pm, after reports of a domestic-related incident.

When they arrived, they found a woman in her mid-40s who was thought to have suffered stab wounds.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 49-year-old man arrested at the address remained in custody at a police station on Merseyside last night.

The victim has not yet been formally identified and police are tracing her next of kin. A post-mortem to determine cause of death is due to be carried out today.

Police were last night conducting forensic investigations at the scene, along with house-to-house inquiries, in a bid to piece together the last known movements of the victim.

Det Ch Insp Nikki Holland, of Merseyside police, said: “At this early stage of the inquiry, it appears we are dealing with a domestic-related incident which has ended in the tragic death of a woman.

“As we build up a picture of both the woman and of the man found at the house, I would ask anyone who may have been in the area between 8pm and 9pm, and who may have seen or heard anything which may help us with our inquiries, to come forward.

“Merseyside police will not tolerate violence of any kind, including violence in the home, and I would reassure our local communities that our investigations will be extremely thorough.”

Anyone with information should call Merseyside police on 0151 709 6010, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
