The tall ship, Training Ship Royalist, arrives at Albert Dock _320
THE TAP Into Water campaign will hit the road this week when it is taken to the Tall Ships waterfront extravaganza.
North West Water company United Utilities (UU) will take their “water bar” to Wellington Dock’s North Quay from Friday.
It will help slake the thirst of a crowd estimated to top 1m over the weekend.
And, as it does, it will also help spread the environmental messages behind Tap Into Water.
United Utilities and the Liverpool Daily Post are asking readers to ditch bottled water in favour of tap.
That’s because tap water does not harm the environment as much as bottled water, which has a higher carbon footprint and wastes plastic bottles.
Tap water causes 300 times less carbon to be released into the environment because it does not have to be bottled and shipped like the 3bn bottles of water people in the UK drink each year.
The £2bn industry also causes millions of plastic bottles to flood our landfill sites. That plastic takes a millennium to biodegrade.
The Daily Post and UU have given away thousands of reusable bottles for life to the region’s school children.
We are encouraging anyone who has one of the bottles to visit the UU marquee and the water bar inside to fill up for the day.
United Utilities’ Christian Ewen said: “We are looking forward to welcoming thousands of visitors to our marquees over the weekend.
“With the Daily Post as our media partners for Tap Into Water, we are urging all visitors to the Tall Ships to bring their ‘Bottles for Life’ and keep themselves well-hydrated courtesy of our water bar.”
More than 70 huge sail ships will fill the city’s docks this week when Liverpool hosts the opening weekend of the Tall Ships races.
They will be berthed in both the Wellington and Albert Docks from Friday until Sunday. They will perform a parade of sail up the Mersey on Monday.
Most of the major Class A Tall Ships – those at least 40m long – will be in Wellington and Sandon half-tide docks.
Daily Post editor Mark Thomas said: “The Tall Ships event will be one of the most memorable weekends of the year, so it’s great for the Daily Post to be there supporting Tap Into Water with United Utilities.
“Drinking tap water is one of the easiest ways to go green, and hopefully we’ll spread that message while also refreshing the crowds.”
