Titanic lunch for commemoration plan

LIVERPOOL Lord Mayor Steve Rotheram yesterday hosted a lunch identical to the last meal eaten by passengers onboard the Titanic.

It was part of the first gathering of the “Titanic Cities” event, aimed at bringing together representatives from places with a connection with the ill-fated vessel. The ship was registered in Liverpool and had the city’s name on her stern, although she was built in Southampton.

The Lord Mayors of Belfast, Southampton and Cobh attended the event to help decide how the 100th anniversary of the tragic maiden voyage should be remembered in 2012.

The representatives all signed a “memorandum of understanding”, pledging a commitment to the organisation of a suitable commemoration for the sinking of the ship.

In a lunch after the talks, the group sat down to a six-course menu offered to first-class passengers on the Titanic on April 14, 1912, with dishes such as Consommé Olga, a clear soup garnished with scallops and cucumber, and Filet Mignon Lili, fillet steak in Madeira sauce.

Other cities involved are as far afield as New York and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
