Fall in road deaths is biggest in country

THE number of people killed on Merseyside’s roads has dropped by 35%, the biggest reduction of fatalities in the country.

Figures released by the Department of Transport also show that serious road injuries on Merseyside decreased by 13%. The total number of people killed on the region’s roads last year was 30, which was 16 fewer than died in the year previously.

A total of 512 people were seriously injured as a result of road traffic collisions. The 35% reduction in road fatalities on Merseyside compares to a reduction of 7% nationally.

Last year Merseyside chief constable Bernard Hogan-Howe increased the number of officers dedicated to policing the region’s roads by 40%.
