Region shares in £6bn to cut jams

MERSEYSIDE is set to benefit from a £6bn government package designed to improve the UK’s motorways and cut jams.

The region will receive £428,000 in the first year of spending from the £60m, which includes plans for hard shoulder driving on North-West motorways.

The fund will be spent over the next three years, with junction improvements on the M62 at Junction 6, Tarbock Island, for Liverpool and the A5117/A550 Deeside Park junction for Cheshire.

Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly said: “I am determined to get the best from our road network, so that motorists have reliable journey times on roads that are safe and well-managed.

“ The £6bn will allow us to develop and implement more innovative approaches to the way we use our major roads.”
