Elderly woman in Birkenhead horror accident

AN ELDERLY woman is believed to have had her legs amputated after being run over by a bus in Wirral.

The accident happened just before 11am yesterday at the bus station in Birkenhead.

Sources last night suggested the woman, who is in her 70s, has had to have her legs amputated.

The ambulance service said they had received “numerous calls” after the collision in Birkenhead town centre.

A spokesman for Arriva Buses later confirmed it was one of their vehicles involved in the collision, a 413 service leaving Birkenhead for Liscard.

He said: “We are doing all we can in terms of assisting the police and emergency services and offering support to the driver.”

North West Ambulance Service sent a trauma team from Arrowe Park Hospital in an ambulance to the scene, along with a rapid response vehicle.

The elderly woman was later taken to Arrowe Park Hospital for treatment.

The bus station was subsequently closed and a green tarpaulin erected against the Arriva vehicle, while police directed onlookers away from the scene.

The bus was stopped on a section of public road used by both cars and buses close to Birkenhead Market.

Buses were queued up on Conway Street, and a public announcement could be heard over the bus station Tannoy announcing it was closed and asking passengers to leave.

Cordons were in place near where the bus was stopped. The bus station was re-opened around three hours later.

Amy Wallace, 19, said she and her friends had arrived at the bus station just after 11am to find police were moving people away.

She said: “There was rumours it was a little old lady who had been hit by a bus, but no-one seemed to know what had happened. It’s so sad.

“I didn’t see what happened, but it’s been raining and horrible weather.”

A spokesman for Merseytravel which operates the bus station said: “There has been an incident which is being dealt with by Merseyside Police.”

According to a police spokeswoman, the woman involved in the incident is elderly and from the local area. She said: “The woman was taken to hospital suffering from lower limb injuries.”

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said last night there will be further investigations.
