A LIVERPOOL joiner was cleared of murdering his partner.
But a jury convicted alcoholic Robert Lynch of the brutal manslaughter of Bernadette Doran, 45, on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
The court heard Lynch, 23, battered his “wholly defenceless” girlfriend with a wooden bannister during a drunken rage at their flat in Chislehurst Avenue, Belle Vale, last September.
Lynch sat with his head in his hands after the verdict.
He had admitted causing Ms Doran’s death but denied murdering her on the grounds of diminished responsibility claiming he was “insane” and in a “psychotic phase at the time”.
Judge Mr Justice Openshaw adjourned sentencing until Wednesday so medical reports could be compiled and remanded Lynch in custody.
