THE seven defendants in the Rhys Jones murder investigation will appear in court today to enter their pleas.

A 17-year-old youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with murder.

James Yates, 20, of Dodman Road, Croxteth, Gary Kays, 25, of Mallard Close, and Melvin Coy, 24, of Abbeyfield Drive, both West Derby, Liverpool, and two boys aged 16 and 17, who also cannot be identified, are all charged with assisting an offender.

Another 16-year-old boy is accused of assisting an offender and possessing a firearm and ammunition.

They will appear before Mr Justice Irwin via video link for the plea and case management hearing at Liverpool Crown Court. The murder trial is due to start on October 2.

Rhys’s parents are expected to attend today’s hearing.

Four other defendants charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice will stand trial later.
