Widow’s plea for witnesses to gun murder

THE widow of a man murdered at work is using the anniversary of his death to appeal for fresh evidence to bring his killers to justice.

James Stanton, 58, a father-of-four from Thornton, was shot in Aintree Commercial Vehicles, Ormskirk Road, Aintree, where he worked.

He was a regular squash player at The Northern Club, Crosby, and well known as a Jujitsu instructor.

Last night, his widow, Jean, appealed for information to help capture the men who killed him at about 6pm on July 2, 2006.

She said: “Two years ago today, my husband and I waved goodbye as we drove our separate ways to work. Little did I know that hours later my life would be changed forever.”

She added: “At the time of Jim's death, we had seven grandchildren. Since then we have welcomed another grandson, named Jim after his grandfather, but sadly he will never get to meet his grandad.

“Someone must know who did this. Please, I beg you to come forward with information.”

Today, police community support officers will be handing out leaflets and speaking to people out- side Aintree Commercials, Aintree railway station and Asda. Police will speak to commuters who may have been making the same trip in 2006.

Officers believe the two men who could be responsible escaped in a blue Toyota Avensis car registration DM53 MKK. It was later found burnt out in Blindfoot Road, Rainford.

Detectives are particularly interested in talking to anyone who may have seen the car being abandoned in Blindfoot Road.

An £11,000 reward is offered for information leading to conviction.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Brunskill said: “We would like to speak to a woman with children, who was stood near the getaway vehicle when the offenders fled.

“We would also like to speak to a man who was on a pedal bike, who indirectly contacted the investig- ation team, but has never directly come forward.”

Witnesses are asked to contact the Guncrime Hotline on 0800 458 1211, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
