Work due to start on Hall Lane bypass in autumn

WORK on a much awaited bypass that will improve traffic flow between the Liverpool city centre, Edge Lane and the M62 is set to start in the autumn.

Liverpool Council’s executive board are being asked to approve a timetable that would see work start on the Hall Lane bypass near the Royal Liverpool Hospital later this year.

Delays have seen the costs rise by almost £2m to around £18m, and additional money is being sought from the Department for Transport (DfT) and Europe.

The project involves building a new access road between Edge Lane and Islington, and will provide a vastly improved route for traffic.

Last night regeneration leader for Liverpool Cllr Peter Millea said: “Hall Lane is one the most notorious bottlenecks in the city and this scheme will be welcomed by motorists and local residents alike.

“It is a great example of joint working by the council and Hospital Trust and it is in everybody’s interests that we get the traffic flows around the hospital right.”

He said the council would attempt to keep disruption to a minimum and he had asked for a residents’ parking scheme in the Kensington Fields area to be considered.
