Thunderstorms and torrential rain cause disruption

THUNDERSTORMS and torrential rain caused some serious disruption to rush-hour commuters yesterday afternoon.

There was a multi-vehicle collision on the A565 (Crosby Road North), Waterloo, which led to the road being closed both ways between South Road and Alexandra Road, Waterloo.

Four cars were involved in the crash at 5.20pm, with one man receiving cuts to his arm but no serious injuries.

The road was fully re-opened to traffic at around 7.20pm.

The torrential thunderstorm also meant Tranmere Rovers’ pre-season friendly against Bolton Wanderers was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

The Wirral club said the heavy rainfall left six inches of water on parts of the pitch at Prenton Park, leaving the surface “completely unplayable”.

Heavy surface water also made driving conditions treacherous on nearby Borough Road.

The weather followed a regular pattern of heavy downpours alternating with periods of bright sunshine.

A Met Office forecaster said there would be patches of light rain in the region this morning, with the weather brightening during the afternoon.
