Taxi drivers get first aid tips as university students do their bit for 08

LIVERPOOL taxi drivers were given a few first aid tips yesterday by keen university students.

Nursing and paramedic students from Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) helped more than 200 drivers learn basic first aid skills.

Recognising that many tourists use taxis, and with Liverpool receiving an increased number of visitors in 2008, the students have devised a first aid training course for cab drivers.

The students visited the Northwest Taxi and Private Hire Exhibition at the Echo Arena and taught drivers about resuscitation and how to deal with a choking or unconscious passenger.

Student nurse Ray Hollis said: “Being in Liverpool, we wanted to do something for the Capital of Culture year which was relevant to our course and we immediately thought of approaching taxi drivers.

“It’s been a real success, they’ve been very responsive.”
