Brouhaha carnival takes to city streets

THE highly anticipated Brouhaha will take over Liverpool city centre tomorrow as the street carnival makes its way into Princes Park.

The fun begins at noon as the region’s largest multicultural parade, with more than 1,500 performers from Merseyside, weaves its way down Mullberry Street through Catharine Street, Princes Avenue, Devonshire Road and ends in Princes Park.

The World in Princes Park event begins at 2pm and continues until 7pm.

Four stages within the Victorian park will host over 200 performers from Europe, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Far East alongside home-grown talent.

Environmental workshops will provide family-friendly fun. International food stalls will cook up a treat for revellers.

Brouhaha’s artistic director, Ray Allan, has taken inspiration from the historical development of calypso, dance, masquerade and carnival. This year’s parade is called “Viey La Cou – de old time courtyard” and celebrates the way in which African slaves, banned from participation in public carnival, developed their own forms of artistic expression in a courtyard environment.

Following emancipation, their traditions were finally brought to a wider audience.

Giles Agis, executive director for Brouhaha, said: “We are so excited about our biggest carnival parade to date.

“We want people to know that it won’t cost them a penny to join in and be a part of the event. This is a carnival for everyone.

“It is a regional, national and international event. We are currently planning the next four years in the run-up to the Olympic games. The theme will be around the theme of immigration, migration and the emergence of Liverpool.

“A big thank you needs to go to the community groups who have worked around the clock to get all of the costumes done under the guidance of Allen Mahabir.”

Plus Dane Group is the main sponsor for this year’s sensational Liverpool International Carnival and World in Princes Park festival. The neighbourhood investment company is providing £10,000 towards the event.

Sonia Bassey-Williams, head of business development for Plus Dane Group, said: “Plus Dane Group is proud to support this award-winning event, which is a true celebration of this area’s culture, heritage and people.”
