A NEW £5m biomedical research unit is to be set up in Liverpool.
Based at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, the National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Unit, will be operated by the Royal Liverpool University and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, in partnership with the University of Liverpool.
The unit will specialise in diseases of the pan-creas, and will offer a direct link between the laboratories and the hos-pital trust, allowing pa-tients to benefit more quickly from new scient-ific breakthroughs.
Robert Sutton, professor of surgery and consultant surgeon at the Royal said: “This is highly significant for the pursuit of treat- ments for patients. No-where else is there a facil-ity like this in the field.”
