Cranes on alert over death

CONCERNED health safety chiefs have written to the manu-facturer of the crane that collapsed in Liver-pool, killing a man.

The Health and Safety Executive investigation has identified a potential problem and now fears for workers’ safety.

Liverpool’s coroner has already written to the Government after Zbignieuw Swirzynski was crushed when a 2.4 tonne stabilising counterweight crashed on to him on the site in Colquitt Street on January 15, 2007.

His death followed a jam on a crucial pulley during gusts, starting a chain reaction ending in the crane’s collapse.

No rules were breach-ed, but the HSE has enlisted the United Crane Operators Asso-ciation to help raise awareness of the prob-lem and to develop solutions.
