MORE than 5,000 arrests have been made by Merseyside police as a result of “targeted operations” since July 2006.
These large-scale operations see the force target a specific theme such as knife-related crime, drug-related crime, vehicle crime and anti-social behaviour crime linked to licensed premises, the transport networks and rogue security companies.
The 5,000th arrest took place during an operation last Friday to target knife crime in licensed premises and on public transport.
This saw metal detectors set up at points around Liverpool city centre to target people carrying offensive weapons.
In total, 317 people were arrested for various offences during the operation.
There have been 72 Total Policing operations since 2006.
